Hello and welcome to Beyond the Algorithm! If you are tired of inaccurate computer-generated recommendations, this may be an event for you. In Beyond the Algorithm, participants will receive at least two personalized recommendations for new canons to try out. This is a fest inspired by crossing over reccing comms like

recthething and

fancake, and giftbox-style events like

fandomgiftbox and

fandom_stocking. Some of the rules, particularly regarding fills, have been adapted from

Preferred Genres: I'm good with anything that isn't straight-up rom-com/comedy. I used to love horror as a kid, like Nightmare on Elm Street or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I haven't consumed anything since the Saw movies. The last thing I watched was Cabin in the Woods a few years ago. I'd love to get some recs on that front, for example!

DNW Genres: Romance/rom-com (romance in mixed into other genres is fine!), straight-up comedy

General Likes: Complex characters, strong narrative, LGBTQI+ characters, slow pacing, poly potential, bamf women, friendship, loyalty, morally grey characters. I generally tend to gravitate toward more realistic things, but I've enjoyed crazy premises, too, I'm just not as likely to pick them out for myself.

General DNWs: villain of the week type things, relationship drama for the sake of drama, Christian guilt, lack of character development, disappointing endings (i.e. shows that don't make good on what they've set up before, like Dexter or GoT)

Fandom Preferences: femslash potential, doesn't need to be *super* popular in exchanges but if people are interested in requested/offering that would be a bonus. Mostly, I'm looking for new fandoms to request/offer in all the upcoming exchanges that also allow the Locked Tomb Trilogy, which is my current fandom obsession.

Requests for Content Warnings: Racism/homophobia/misogyny. Anything that "didn't age well."

General Likes: I love media with "I did not expect that, but I should have totally guessed that was coming!" twists. Media I can really sink my teeth into and analyse, either from a theme perspective or a "who is the killer?" perspective. Characters with traumatic backstories, explorations of trauma in general. Worldbuilding. Queer characters. Villains with sympathetic-but-not-necessarily-good justifications for their actions. Action scenes. Characters who cannot be together romantically for [insert reason here]. Tragedies. Bittersweet endings. 'Earn your happy ending.' Badass women. 'Shippy' moments and romantic comedy elements.

General DNWs: Unplanned pregnancy as a major plot point. Plots that revolve entirely around abusive relationships (either romantic or familial.) In visual media, high amounts of blood/gore/torture scenes.

Fandom Preferences: I have a slight preference for fandoms with femslash potential and a reasonable exchange presense, but it's a slight preference, and I'd still be interested in male-heavy canons or canons without much of an exchange presence.

Requests for Content Warnings: Torture in written works, underage sex, rape in general.

General Likes: high drama. Make me emotional, make me cry, make me sit on the edge of the seat. Give me a mystery to unravel. Or make me laugh. I love programs and books that have me gripping my belly, tears of joy rolling down my face. I am a shipper at heart, so I'd love anything with a real rootable couple in it, although it's not necessary because oddly enough, I love crazy watching complete dysfunction too. Great acting and writing are important!

General DNWs: anything overly political or religious. Please entertain me. Not preach at me. Porn. Some sex scenes are just fine and welcomed even, but if most of the content is humpin' and grindin' don't include it please. Black & white programs. Old movies. I like vibrant techicolor haha

Fandom Preferences: Any size fandom is fine, though I do like discovering new things, so a smaller fandom is enjoyed and appreciated. Shipping potential, especially M/F and F/F couples, strong genfic culture. Some vids are nice, although it's not necessary either.
