Hello and welcome to Beyond the Algorithm! If you are tired of inaccurate computer-generated recommendations, this may be an event for you. In Beyond the Algorithm, participants will receive at least two personalized recommendations for new canons to try out. This is a fest inspired by crossing over reccing comms like [community profile] recthething and [community profile] fancake, and giftbox-style events like [community profile] fandomgiftbox and [community profile] fandom_stocking. Some of the rules, particularly regarding fills, have been adapted from [community profile] fandomgiftbox's ruleset.

Apologies for not making a post sooner! All comments have been unscreened, recs are visible, and it's time to hopefully kick off this year with some new canons and fanworks.

If you still have recommendations to make, please feel free to comment now! All recboxes will remain open for fills until the end of the week (Friday, January 8).

Participants, please leave a comment acknowledging your reccers' work, even if the canon doesn't quite work for you. If you have received a fill that violates a DNWed media type or appears to be in bad faith, you may reach out either by commenting on this post (comments are screened) or by emailing beyondthealgorithmmod@protonmail.com.

Thank you all for participating! We hope to see you next year.

As the deadline approaches (this coming Sunday, the 27th, will begin official checks to ensure all participants have recommendations), I encourage everyone to look at the requests to see if there are any other recommendations to make. As stated in the rules, comments will not be unscreened until every participant has at least two recommendations in the comments.

From a cursory glance, the following participants do not have the minimum number of recommendations in their comments yet:
Underfilled Recboxes )

Of course, please feel free to make recommendations for participants who are not on this list!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to reach out via Dreamwidth direct message or via email at beyondthealgorithmmod@protonmail.com.

Preferred Genres: science fiction, ergodic literature, urban fantasy (i.e. not high/historical fantasy), slice-of-life/coming-of-age, mystery, philosophical, intrigue, crime/autopsy, magical realism, comedy, poetry, horror themes (provided happy ending). I really like J-dramas (one season) that are focused on plot if you have a source, or really obscure-ish little animes.

DNW Genres: romantic comedy (romance in other genres is fine), angst, melodrama, historical fiction, period fiction, non-fiction/documentary, apocalypse/post-apocalypse

Preferred Media Types: text-based (third-person pov preferred) or video-based, short if visual (i.e. one season)

DNW Media Types: audio-only media (i.e. podcast), graphic novel (manga/manhwa/manhua are okay), video games that don't have at least one playthrough on YouTube (since I don't play, only watch)

General Likes: clever dialogue/banter, visually appealing (colour/composition) or textually appealing (prose style), intricate plot, 2LGBTQIA+ representation (especially aspec), ethnic diversity, friendship, happy ending, three-dimensional female characters, established relationships, queerplatonic relationships, philosophical musings

General DNWs: major character death, angst, explicit sexual content, unhappy ending, grim reality, systemic injustice, prison/justice system, racism, graphic gore, USA-centric view of the world, abuse/corporal punishment/dub-non-con, focus on politics/religion

Fandom Preferences: slash/femslash potential, genfic potential, completely optional but appreciated: prevalence of Blanket Statements (i.e. Transformative Works Policy), openness to podfic in fandom events (if the fandom is big enough to have events. Tiny fandoms/be-the-first fandoms are cool too!)

Requests for Content Warnings: anything that would fit even a bit in an Ao3 Archive Warning (following their definitions). I do not mind spoilers at all (I appreciated all the "tags".)

Languages I'm Comfortable With: For canon: anything with English subtitles (as a second choice, French, Spanish or German. Dutch/Italian/Portuguese in a very tight pinch.) For fanworks: English

Note: I have a really narrow corridor of canon-likes right now (sorry! it's a strange time!) so I'm totally okay with not receiving any canon-recs BUT I love getting into fanworks while being fandom-blind. So please take this as a request for either canons that fit my likes, or fandoms with fanworks (primarily fanfic) that fit my likes. I'm also cool with RPF fandoms.

Preferred Genres: I'm good with anything that isn't straight-up rom-com/comedy. I used to love horror as a kid, like Nightmare on Elm Street or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I haven't consumed anything since the Saw movies. The last thing I watched was Cabin in the Woods a few years ago. I'd love to get some recs on that front, for example!

DNW Genres: Romance/rom-com (romance in mixed into other genres is fine!), straight-up comedy

Preferred Media Types: Any

DNW Media Types: None

General Likes: Complex characters, strong narrative, LGBTQI+ characters, slow pacing, poly potential, bamf women, friendship, loyalty, morally grey characters. I generally tend to gravitate toward more realistic things, but I've enjoyed crazy premises, too, I'm just not as likely to pick them out for myself.

General DNWs: villain of the week type things, relationship drama for the sake of drama, Christian guilt, lack of character development, disappointing endings (i.e. shows that don't make good on what they've set up before, like Dexter or GoT)

Fandom Preferences: femslash potential, doesn't need to be *super* popular in exchanges but if people are interested in requested/offering that would be a bonus. Mostly, I'm looking for new fandoms to request/offer in all the upcoming exchanges that also allow the Locked Tomb Trilogy, which is my current fandom obsession.

Requests for Content Warnings: Racism/homophobia/misogyny. Anything that "didn't age well."

Examples of Media Enjoyed:
Books
The Locked Tomb Trilogy - Tamsyn Muir
Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan
Oryx and Crake, The Handmaid's Tale, The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood
Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo

first four(?) seasons of Dexter

Richard II - Shakespeare

Examples of Media to Avoid: Arrowverse/The CW dramas, Marvel, shows where relationships are just used for drama, later seasons of Supernatural, The Walking Dead post-s9,

Streaming Services I Can Access: I'm not based in the US, so the streaming libraries differ, but: Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, hoopla, Prime

Languages I'm Comfortable With: English and anything that offers English subtitles (do not want English dub only). Additionally for reading, German and middle grade French/Japanese

Preferred Genres: Sci fic (esp space opera and military sci fi), fantasy, romance

DNW Genres: First person shooter video games, episodic series where events re-set to zero after every episode.

Preferred Media Types: Books, visual novels, video games, short animated series (~12 episodes or less), podcasts.

DNW Media Types: Live action tv series or movies.

General Likes: I love media with "I did not expect that, but I should have totally guessed that was coming!" twists. Media I can really sink my teeth into and analyse, either from a theme perspective or a "who is the killer?" perspective. Characters with traumatic backstories, explorations of trauma in general. Worldbuilding. Queer characters. Villains with sympathetic-but-not-necessarily-good justifications for their actions. Action scenes. Characters who cannot be together romantically for [insert reason here]. Tragedies. Bittersweet endings. 'Earn your happy ending.' Badass women. 'Shippy' moments and romantic comedy elements.

General DNWs: Unplanned pregnancy as a major plot point. Plots that revolve entirely around abusive relationships (either romantic or familial.) In visual media, high amounts of blood/gore/torture scenes.

Fandom Preferences: I have a slight preference for fandoms with femslash potential and a reasonable exchange presense, but it's a slight preference, and I'd still be interested in male-heavy canons or canons without much of an exchange presence.

Requests for Content Warnings: Torture in written works, underage sex, rape in general.

Examples of Media Enjoyed: The Machineries of Empire Series by Yoon Ha Lee, Warhammer 40k, Mo Du by Priest, Mo Dao Zu Shi by Moxiang Tongxiu, Sarazanmai, Revolutionary Girl Utena, My Next Life As A Villainess, The Tensorate Series by JY Yang, The Magnus Archives, The Adventure Zone, The Silmarillion, The Reluctant Royals series by Alyssa Cole, We Know the Devil

Preferred Genres: Scifi and Fantasy (I like all subgenres within them!). I've been reading a lot of cnovels lately, too; mostly unlimited flow and things that care more about plot than romance.

DNW Genres: I was trying to think of genres I'd DNW and kept coming up with exceptions, so I'm not gonna DNW any genres at all. Sitcoms

Preferred Media Types: Books! I am happy to have recs for visual stuff too but I tend to read faster than I consume any other form of media.

DNW Media Types: Youtube. Audio-only content (if it has transcripts, then feel free to rec it).

General Likes: Queer stuff (especially polyam, bi, aro, and ace! I like both f/f and m/m.), competence porn, politics, characters being clever, military stuff (war and strategy and tactics), worldbuilding, philosophy, religion (especially when it's not Christian/Christian-expy), linguistics/fun things with language, anthropology, science!, plotty stories, gen shenanigans/team as family/found family, genre bending/blending, mysteries/casefic, romance so long as it's not the only plot

General DNWs: Anything to do with Nazis

Fandom Preferences: No preferences. (like, 90% of time I know nothing about the fandoms for media I consume?)

Requests for Content Warnings: Rape, transphobia, blood magic, extensive descriptions of self-harm or suicidal ideation

Examples of Media Enjoyed: Star Wars (movies, cartoons, legends EU, new EU, video games...), Modao Zushi (I like all the adaptations too), everything Max Gladstone has written (Ruin of Angels and Empress of Forever are special highlights), Quanzhi Gaoshou/The King's Avatar (Hudie Lan; I like the novel better than the adaptations), Tamora Pierce's works (Protector of the Small and Emelan especially), Nirvana in Fire (TV), Friends at the Table (Podcast), The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water (Zen Cho), anything Neon Yang has written (originally published under J. Y. Yang), The Goblin Emperor (Katherine Addison), Harrow the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir), The Coldfire Trilogy (C. S. Friedman), Always Coming Home (Ursula K. Le Guin), Atomic Blonde (movie), The Old Guard (movie), Battlestar Galactica (2003), The Expanse (TV), The Vorkosigan Saga (Lois McMaster Bujold)

Preferred Media Types: Any, though given I don’t live in an English-speaking country I may have difficult access to English language books

DNW Media Types: None!

General Likes: Stories dealing with trauma of any kind, psychological/cosmic/abstract horror (think of the best creepypastas around rather than mainstream horror movies and novels), mysteries, complex constructed worlds (both scifi and fantasy), LGBT+ themes (I can forgive most clichés if it’s an explicitly LGBT story)

I am so excited about this!

Username: luvbarryfefe

Preferred Genres: teen/young adult themes, comedy, romance, drama, soaps, mystery/thriller, horror, paranormal stuff (vampires, werewolves, etc.). Superhero stuff. Marvel preferred, but I do like some DC shows and movies as well.

DNW Genres: non-fiction (reality tv), competition shows, heavy science fiction themes (not a big fan of movies like Star Wars).

Preferred Media Types: books (available in print form please; not just ebook!), movies, web series, and TV shows

DNW Media Types: podcasts, anime, kids' cartoons

General Likes: high drama. Make me emotional, make me cry, make me sit on the edge of the seat. Give me a mystery to unravel. Or make me laugh. I love programs and books that have me gripping my belly, tears of joy rolling down my face. I am a shipper at heart, so I'd love anything with a real rootable couple in it, although it's not necessary because oddly enough, I love crazy watching complete dysfunction too. Great acting and writing are important!

General DNWs: anything overly political or religious. Please entertain me. Not preach at me. Porn. Some sex scenes are just fine and welcomed even, but if most of the content is humpin' and grindin' don't include it please. Black & white programs. Old movies. I like vibrant techicolor haha

Fandom Preferences: Any size fandom is fine, though I do like discovering new things, so a smaller fandom is enjoyed and appreciated. Shipping potential, especially M/F and F/F couples, strong genfic culture. Some vids are nice, although it's not necessary either.

Requests for Content Warnings: Animal abuse. Graphic rape scenes.

Preferred Media Types: TV, Films, Books, Graphic Novels, Podcasts

DNW Media Types: N/A

General Likes: Found Family, Mature couples, Broken people finding comfort in each other, multi-generational casts, diverse cast of characters

General DNWs: Graphic depictions of gore, rape/non-con, graphic depictions of torture (I'm okay with some of this happening off screen, but I just don't want to experience it first hand with the character), everybody dies at the end

Fandom Preferences: Some fic on A03 would be nice, but not strictly necessary

Requests for Content Warnings: N/A

Examples of Media Enjoyed: Supernatural, Star Trek (TOS, TNG, VOY), Stranger Things, The Old Guard, here is a link to my A03 so you can see other fandoms I have consumed and written for.

Examples of Media to Avoid:
*Star Trek: Picard, watched the first episode and I wasn't fussed on it, but I may go back to it at some point.

Preferred Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Epic Poetry

DNW Genres: None

Preferred Media Types: Any

DNW Media Types: None

General Likes: an emphasis on families of the f'ed up variety (ex: the skywalker family, the main family in Supergiant's Hades) -- particularly when the situation isn't black and white (ie one character is not exclusively evil/another is exclusively good), characters who are NOT human but interact with humans (ex: Dr. in Dr. Who, any god with mortals) and may behave in ways that are beyond mortal comprehension, haunted houses, explorations of afterlife/multiple lifetimes, star-crossed lovers, female monsters/explorations of feminity in monsters, resurrection but changed/came back wrong resurrections, new explorations of fiction classics in modern times (ex: The Scarlet Letter->Easy A, the myth of Orpheus/Eurydice->Hadestown, etc.), anything and everything mythology, space politics, cooking shows/web shows

General DNWs: torture porn horror (ex: SAW franchise), Scat/Urine/Vomitplay, anything focusing exclusively on sexual violence on a child or excessive violence toward a child (a slap or children playfighitng or the like is fine; breaking bones or worse, I'd prefer a warning)

Fandom Preferences: I'd love a fandom that has a fair amount of love for female characters (femslash or not), but honestly I'm just looking to to expand my taste and find new canons in general.

Requests for Content Warnings: anything involving sexual assault on people under 18, super gory violence, heavy focus on animal cruelty/torture

Examples of Media Enjoyed: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Hadestown, Hades, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Space Channel 5, Yakuza, Tekken, Persona/Shin Megami Tensei games, Shadow Hearts, Final Fantasy, Star Wars: Original/Prequel trilogy, Star Trek (all of them but DS9 is my favorite), Greek mythology, Roman mythology, etruscan mythology, any mythology tbh, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, Sorcerer to the Crown series, Hexate series, Sabrina: the Teenage Witch (both series), Stranger Things, Discworld (especially the Death! and Guards! series), Evil, The Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor, Rome, Game of Thrones, Nier:Automata, Star Ocean 2, Valkyrie Profile series, Suikoden series, Dishonored series, Crazyhead, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies, Parks and Rec, the Good Place, any and every cooking show on the internet I can find (PBS, Salt/Fat/Acid/Heat, Good Eats, Bon Appetit, Historical Kitchen)

Examples of Media to Avoid: SAW/Texas Chainsaw Massacre stuff - I like my horror more spooky than gory, anything really long (I just don't have the time to watch 700+ episodes of a series anymore)

Streaming Services I Can Access: Hulu, Amazon, Disney, CBS, Netflix, HBO, Showtime, Spotify, Youtube (but not Youtube Red)

Languages I'm Comfortable With: I can watch/read English, Spanish, Italian but I'll watch anything with subtitles in one of those languages
