Preferred Genres: science fiction, ergodic literature, urban fantasy (i.e. not high/historical fantasy), slice-of-life/coming-of-age, mystery, philosophical, intrigue, crime/autopsy, magical realism, comedy, poetry, horror themes (provided happy ending). I really like J-dramas (one season) that are focused on plot if you have a source, or really obscure-ish little animes.
DNW Genres: romantic comedy (romance in other genres is fine), angst, melodrama, historical fiction, period fiction, non-fiction/documentary, apocalypse/post-apocalypse
Preferred Media Types: text-based (third-person pov preferred) or video-based, short if visual (i.e. one season)
DNW Media Types: audio-only media (i.e. podcast), graphic novel (manga/manhwa/manhua are okay), video games that don't have at least one playthrough on YouTube (since I don't play, only watch)
General Likes: clever dialogue/banter, visually appealing (colour/composition) or textually appealing (prose style), intricate plot, 2LGBTQIA+ representation (especially aspec), ethnic diversity, friendship, happy ending, three-dimensional female characters, established relationships, queerplatonic relationships, philosophical musings
General DNWs: major character death, angst, explicit sexual content, unhappy ending, grim reality, systemic injustice, prison/justice system, racism, graphic gore, USA-centric view of the world, abuse/corporal punishment/dub-non-con, focus on politics/religion
Fandom Preferences: slash/femslash potential, genfic potential, completely optional but appreciated: prevalence of Blanket Statements (i.e. Transformative Works Policy), openness to podfic in fandom events (if the fandom is big enough to have events. Tiny fandoms/be-the-first fandoms are cool too!)
Requests for Content Warnings: anything that would fit even a bit in an Ao3 Archive Warning (following their definitions). I do not mind spoilers at all (I appreciated all the "tags".)
Examples of Media Enjoyed: Dennou Coil (anime), Check Please!, Studio Ghibli,

Languages I'm Comfortable With: For canon: anything with English subtitles (as a second choice, French, Spanish or German. Dutch/Italian/Portuguese in a very tight pinch.) For fanworks: English
Note: I have a really narrow corridor of canon-likes right now (sorry! it's a strange time!) so I'm totally okay with not receiving any canon-recs BUT I love getting into fanworks while being fandom-blind. So please take this as a request for either canons that fit my likes, or fandoms with fanworks (primarily fanfic) that fit my likes. I'm also cool with RPF fandoms.

Date: 2020-12-21 08:38 pm (UTC)Reasons you might enjoy it!
- One of the two lead characters is nonbinary
- Polyamory is socially normalized, and one of the lead characters is in a polyamorous family (with a child) at the beginning of the story—and still gets a romance arc with the other lead
- Said romance arc is rivals-to-friends-to-dating
- Cool stuff about the nature of AI and what makes something sentient
- I found it to have a really positive outlook on people and society, personally.
I think you also might want to check out the author Nicole Kornher-Stace, who has made it her life's work to publish books about friendship. Whether or not characters are explicitly aro-ace, she's writing as an aro-ace author and showing the kinds of relationships on-screen that she's interested in.

Date: 2020-12-31 10:34 pm (UTC)I believe I've mentioned Dreaming of Sunshine in other contexts, but I think it may be something you enjoy! While it is written in first person, it's a weighty fic (clocking in at about 716,000 words) with an active recursive fandom. You don't need to be aware of Naruto to enjoy it, and in fact many of the participants in the twice-yearly recursive exchange (which includes podfic!) have never seen or read Naruto and only know the canon through Dreaming of Sunshine. If you are familiar with the canon: It's a self-insert original character fic, where the author has been reincarnated as Nara Shikako, twin sister of Nara Shikamaru, and takes Haruno Sakura's place on Team 7 with Uzumaki Naruto and Uchiha Sasuke. DoS itself hits a lot of your likes (intimate friendships, philosophical musings, POV female character, banter, plot -- its tagline should be 'epic plotty gen'), and the fandom is strongly focused on gen, T-rated at most works. There are high-stakes moments, as well as serious arcs (including characters dealing with PTSD), but overall it's not an angsty work.

Date: 2021-01-02 06:09 pm (UTC)title: away
genre: science fiction
media type: tv show (1 season)
source material: netflix
wikia/imdb: imdb
trailer: teaser | youtube
cast interviews: behind the scenes | interviews with jake hamilton
notes: this show only has one season because it was cancelled. however, the ending is pretty solid, with the majority of storylines rounded up enough to inspire fandom extension, but not feel like a cliff-hanger.
there's a bit of politics involved, because of where some of the astronauts are from, but it's not overwhelming.
although the entry into the show is a middle-upper class, white, american, cis-het family -- (mum, dad, daughter) -- the cast is diverse, and you get to see the background of all the characters.
there is a canonically LGBTQIA+ relationship and characters. they don't quite get a happily ever after, because one of them is in space. but, they do get a possibly happy ending.
essentially, this show is about family, and questions how far people should go in regards to "loyalty". 'space' is the background, the 'mission' is the situation, and 'family' is the overarching theme.
despite how tense the show can be, there are no major character deaths.
~
thinking of this show reminded me of a film, based on a book. so, here is a second rec!
title: the martian
genre: science fiction
media type: film (based on a book)
source material: netflix
wikia/imdb: imdb
trailer: youtube
tumblr recs: gifset by vivenvalentino
notes: admittedly, i couldn't finish this film when i first tried to watch it. but, then i came back to it late last year because of donald glover, and thought it was quite good!
at 2h 21m, it's a long film, but it doesn't actually feel long because of the various characters you get to meet and the fact that it's focused on solving a problem.
essentially, this film is about survival, but you get to see ethical and moral dilemmas, too. (akin to away.) i haven't read the book by andy weir, so i don't know how much it's true to the original source material.
off the top of my head, i don't recall any canon LGBTQIA+ characters in this, so it's likely there's none, or it's vague enough to not stand out. but, there is a slightly diverse cast!
it's tense for a minute, but there are no major character deaths.

- Listen I'm probably preaching to the choir here but, Terry Pratchett? He co-wrote Good Omens and his Discworld books (of which there are many) are fantastic, though YMMV - if you don't like footnotes, you won't like his style. i Iove his sense of humour.
- Wayfarers series & To be taught if fortunate (novella) / Becky Chambers (Queer relationships! Exploration of space and different cultures within it,with a focus on the characters.)
- Binti / Nnedi Okorafor (POC space novella, has two sequels, protag is based on the Himba people) and decides to leave Earth to go to an intergalactic university)
- Definitely second The Martian, both book and film!
TV Series
- Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries - quite a light-hearted murder mystery series set in late 1920s Australia, not so great on the racial diversity though. Fun, with great costumes and some good female representation from the main protag Miss Fisher (who is neither virgin nor mother nor crone), her foil (and maid) Dotty, and Doctor MacMillan who pops up as best friend. There are deaths, but they're not the main characters, and it's not too bloody or gory iirc. On netflix.
- Leverage - found family heist series, again it's fun and quite Robin Hoodesque. There's an almost canon OT3? Amazon Prime (I don't have Prime so not 100% sure but google tells me so). Set in the US, one POC in the main cast.
- Firefly - space western! Unfortunately cancelled by TPB after a season, but there's Serenity the movie sequel(was on Netflix... don't think it is any longer but that could be just my region. Amazon Prime seems to win again) There are two POC in the main cast.
