TV x2 + a movie
Date: 2020-12-03 10:16 pm (UTC)Based on your likes: femslash & femslash potential, friendship, female eye-candy, lots and lots of worldbuilding (especially for secondary world fantasy/sci-fi,) joy and fun, also bittersweetness I think you might like Motherland: Fort Salem. You can watch the first couple of episodes for free on Freeform (website or app) and more if you have regular cable, and the entire season is on Hulu. It's got a decent showing in exchanges and I would imagine might become more popular as more seasons come.
Of note: The show is ongoing and has one season in the books and another green lit - but due to current events, who knows when that will get made? I don't think the S1 ending is a cliffhanger per se - but it does open up a lot of possibilities/questions for S2 - which according to the creators is just going to be bonkers (in what sounds like a really exciting way).
There is so much cool worldbuilding. If it was a novel, based on the worldbuilding, I would say it was magical realism, but given its a live action show about witches, it def. falls into the sci-fi/fantasty genre. It's near future sci-fi but the worldbuilding is such that the premise of their society is that it's female dominated. Instead of a traditional military presence, witches are conscripted into service and protect the country/world. There is also a female president - it's very female focused - triple checks the Female Eye Candy box - the show focuses on 3 different generations, so hot ladies of all ages depending on your preferences.
I think there is a lot of media out there about witches, but their power in this show is generated from vocal ranges/singing. I think it is really unique and executed well in a live action setting. There is a lot of family intrigue and I thought it hand kind of a slow start, but it really picked up and the worldbuilding gets bigger and bigger each episode. I really enjoyed watching them "pull on the yarn" so to speak.
On Netflix
-Sticking with Sci-Fi with strong female characters and friendships as the focus, you might enjoy Dark Matter - It's 3 seasons and 39 episodes. It was canceled, so not necessarily the ending the creators had in mind, but I think the ending is essentially what could be the start of a new story - and I didn't find it felt unfinished or that too much was hanging unresolved. There is a lot of fun identity stuff, if that strikes you - that fun/joy but also bittersweet is a lot of the vibe. Older canon with femslash potential- and I still see it requested in exchanges.
-This is maybe out there a bit, but based on your Lady Bird and But I'm a Cheerleader likes, if you have any interest in a fictionalized tale that is about poker, but not really about poker, you might check out Molly's Game (2017). You have to be into Jessica Chastain - but she is excellent eye candy in this movie, plus Idris Elba who I personally find charming in every role. No femslash potential, but I just think it is a very under rated movie with a great female protagonist and a more complicated story than we often get - which was the connection to Lady Bird in my mind.

Date: 2021-01-02 07:07 pm (UTC)Have you read The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? It is a second-world fantasy novel that's heavily focused on worldbuilding, and follows the arc of Maia, the half-goblin son of the recently-deceased emperor, as he takes the throne after years of being isolated with no expectation that he'd ever be part of court. Maia must adapt to the courtly customs and learn who to trust as he unravels the mystery of the deaths of the old emperor, his children, and their court, while balancing his public image with his own needs. Overall, this is a great fandom for gen (and some shipping, though it's mostly m/m), and while it's not super popular in exchanges, there are a surprising number of people who are familiar with the canon!
Content warnings: Maia is the victim of child abuse. There is one on-page scene with a detailed description of physical abuse, and he deals with the trauma/aftermath of it throughout the story, but it's more of a minor arc than a major plotline.
