Preferred Genres: Sci-Fi/fantasy, teenage/coming of age, historical fiction, comedy, dramedy, adventure, magical realism
DNW Genres: Horror, Romance/rom-com (but romance mixed with other plot is fine, as are some horrific elements)
Preferred Media Types: Books, live-action tv, movies (but I'm open to other media types as long as it's not DNW)
DNW Media Types: Comics, video games that cannot be accessed on an iPhone, animated tv

General DNWs: Grimdark/unending sadness, really overt after-school special type messaging, graphic torture, focus on rape, focus on any abuse but especially animal or child abuse
Fandom Preferences: All of these things would be enjoyed but are by no means requirements: femslash potential, strong genfic culture, popular in exchanges, a sense of community

Examples of Media to Avoid: Crazy-Ex Girlfriend, Degrassi, One Day at a Time, Perks of Being a Wallflower

Date: 2021-01-02 07:07 pm (UTC)Have you read The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison? It is a second-world fantasy novel that's heavily focused on worldbuilding, and follows the arc of Maia, the half-goblin son of the recently-deceased emperor, as he takes the throne after years of being isolated with no expectation that he'd ever be part of court. Maia must adapt to the courtly customs and learn who to trust as he unravels the mystery of the deaths of the old emperor, his children, and their court, while balancing his public image with his own needs. Overall, this is a great fandom for gen (and some shipping, though it's mostly m/m), and while it's not super popular in exchanges, there are a surprising number of people who are familiar with the canon!
Content warnings: Maia is the victim of child abuse. There is one on-page scene with a detailed description of physical abuse, and he deals with the trauma/aftermath of it throughout the story, but it's more of a minor arc than a major plotline.
