Hello and welcome to Beyond the Algorithm! If you are tired of inaccurate computer-generated recommendations, this may be an event for you. In Beyond the Algorithm, participants will receive at least two personalized recommendations for new canons to try out. This is a fest inspired by crossing over reccing comms like [community profile] recthething and [community profile] fancake, and giftbox-style events like [community profile] fandomgiftbox and [community profile] fandom_stocking. Some of the rules, particularly regarding fills, have been adapted from [community profile] fandomgiftbox's ruleset.

Participants will sign up with some details about their likes and dislikes, and then during the creation period others will have an opportunity to recommend new canons for a specific participant to consume. A template for signup will be provided in a separate post.

To make a rec, you must comment on the participant's request post. Recs should be more extensive than simply the title of a book, film, show, or other media type. A fandom primer (such as the fandom pimp posts on comms like [community profile] smallfandomfest), a short paragraph about why you think the recipient would enjoy the canon, or simply a detailed description of the canon would all suffice as fills. Each participant will receive at least two recs.

Examples of invalid fills include:
- the aforementioned "Title of a book and nothing more"
- recommending a canon that the participant has mentioned in their signup that they already like and/or dislike
- recommending something that violates a participant's media type DNWs (e.g., if a participant indicates in their signup that audio-only media is not for them, and then receives two podcast recs, their rec-box is still unfilled)
- a recommendation in bad faith, such as one that mocks the recipient's taste in fiction or their shipping/fandom/etc preferences

Participants should not use their signup to comment on the quality of any particular canon or its fans. "I bounced off of Star Trek 2009 because of the characterization" = OK! "Don't rec me Star Trek 2009 because it sucks" = Not OK. DNWs that conflict with requests will not be enforced (e.g., "I am looking for books set during the Second World War" and "DNW historical settings" are incompatible.).

Anyone, whether recipient or reccer, who is found to be participating in bad faith may be kicked from the event and/or banned for potential future round(s).

There will be an optional AO3 collection for anyone who wishes to cross-post fandom primers to AO3.

Participants are expected to comment on each of their gifts. You do not need to be effusive in your praise, especially if the recommendation isn't your speed, but please acknowledge the effort the reccer put in at the very least.
